Unemployment Estimates Released

The Department of Workforce Development Wednesday released the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates of unemployment and employment statistics for metro areas, major cities and counties in Wisconsin.

For metropolitan statistical areas - preliminary July 2017 unemployment rates decreased in all areas when compared over the year to July 2016 and decreased or remained the same in all areas compared over the month to June 2017. The largest decline was 1.3 percent in Racine. The rates ranged from 2.5 percent in Madison to 4.2 percent in Racine.

Preliminary July 2017 rates decreased or remained the same in all 72 counties when compared over the year to July 2016 rates and decreased or remained the same in 67 of the 72 counties over the month to June 2017. The latest rates ranged from 2.5 percent in Dane and Iowa Counties to 7.4 percent in Menominee County.

The unemployment rate in Clark County dropped from 3.8 percent last July to 2.9 percent this year. Taylor also has a rate of 2.9 percent, down from 3.7 percent a year ago. Marathon County's rate of 3.0 percent is down from 3.7 percent, Eau Claire County has a rate of 3.1 percent, down from 3.7 percent, Jackson County is at 3.2 percent, down from 4.0 percent and Wood County's unemployment rate is at 3.8 percent, which is down from 5.1 percent last July.
