Wisconsin Gun Deer Season Has Arrived

Saturday, November 21st, 2020 -- 11:07 AM

Today is the start of the 9 day Wisconsin Gun Deer Hunting Season. In 2020 some special reminders for hunters.

Hunters are reminded to watch for others especially when hunting on public land. As some hunters have decided to stick closer to home this year, more hunting on public lands is expected.

Traditional activites such as gathering at "deer camp" following the day's hunt is risky due to the pandemic.

Central Wisconsin hunters are also reminded to watch out for elk. An elk calf is about the same size as a full size adult deer. Wisconsin's elk population is growing and elk are moving out of their traditional areas. The Wisconsin DNR says hunters should take an extra second to make sure of what they are shooting at.

Hunters often use ATVs or UTVs to retrieve harvests or travel off-road to their hunting location. Hunters should remember to wear helmets and buckle up. Most hunting incidents involving ATVs or UTVs often occur on private land.

Finally hunters are reminded to register deer online or by phone and dispose of deer carcasses in DNR approved containers located around the state.

Good luck to all those hunting this year.
