Clark County Extension Office at the Clark County Fair, Part 4

Friday, August 4th, 2017 -- 11:41 AM

-The Clark County Fair begins next week and the Clark County UW-Extension Office is hard at work preparing for it.

I spoke with Melissa Kono, CNRED Agent, and Chris Holler, 4-H Advisor, and they talked about some of the events they’re doing at the fair. Chris continued the interview by talking about the many, many events happening with the 4-H at the Clark County Fair.

Chris: "Some of our other departments that are a little bit bigger, like Cultural Arts and Photography, are going to be judged conference style. It's all face-to-face. It's just different from the bank line judging with the other categories. And from our end, we only have to handle it once. We take it from the judging table and we put it back on display."

"For the conference judging, we go by department, class and lot number. And this is where the stress come in a little bit, you do need to be present when your class and lot number are called. So, lets say there's four people in Cultural Arts Jewelry Making. When that lot and class number are called up, they do need to come up withe their project and set it down. Not only does that show who there competition is, so they can be like, 'I didn't do really good on this' from just looking at their competition. Or, even if they didn't do really good on it, they can talk about it and say 'this is what I'd change and this what I learned and I just wanted to get it done for the fair.'"

"That way the judge will have that discretion when they talk with them. You can have not a great project, but you know all the ins and outs of the project, you may do better than a project that's pristine, but the kid can't talk about it because they didn't do a lot of it."

Coming up on Monday, we’ll hear more about what’s happening at the Clark County Fair with the UW-Extension Office.
