Marshfield School District Approves Hiring 4-Year-Old Kindergarten Teacher

Thursday, July 13th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(WDLB) -The Marshfield School District is hiring a fulltime equivalent four-year-old kindergarten teacher for the coming school year.

The Board of Education last night voted 5-to-1 in favor of the hire. Finance Committee Chair Amber Kiggens-Leifheit said the district was left with no choice, after one of its current 4-K providers said it would only be hosting two sessions for the coming school year, and not three sessions as it had done in the past. The School Board agreed to put the session at Washington School, in a classroom that's been used as a 4-K room before. The position will be committed half-time to the 4-K program, and half-time for other teaching duties. In February, the Board of Education rejected a pilot program aimed at creating its own 4-K program within the district's elementary schools. The vote back in February was 5-to-1 against a pilot program that would've moved some of the district's 4-K kids into classrooms, while keeping the rest where they've been, at various child care centers.

Last night's vote was also 5-to-1 in favor of the 4-K teaching position, with Mary Carney casting the only "no" vote. The school district currently has 4-K students in both morning and afternoon sessions Tuesdays through Fridays at seven different facilities throughout the Marshfield School District. Also last night, the School Board voted in favor of adding more school counselors. Kiggens-Leifheit said a total of three counselors would be added. One full-time counselor position was on the chopping block, had last November's referendum been voted down.
