Granton Man Killed in Multi-Vehicle Accident

Wednesday, July 12th, 2017 -- 11:17 AM

-A Granton man was killed in a multi vehicle accident near Granton on Monday.

The accident occurred around 12:20pm on Monday on Highway 10 by Meridian Ave in the Township of Grant. An initial investigation by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department indicates that a flag man had stopped a semi-tractor and trailer driving east because of some road construction. Three automobiles had stopped behind the semi waiting for the flag man to signal they could proceed. While they were all stopped, a semi-tractor trailer approached them from behind, driven by 53-year-old Roger Waltemate, and hit a Jeep Liberty being driven by 47-year-old Anthony Phipps. Anthony’s vehicle came to rest in the north ditch facing west. The semi-tractor trailer continued east and struck a red Dodge Caravan driven by 67-year-old Raymond Fredrick. The semi pushed Raymond’s vehicle into a Mercury Sable in front of him that was driven by 32-year-old Meghan Newman. Meghan had a minor passenger that was 10 yrs. old. The semi that was stopped on the road by the flagman had seen the truck coming from behind him and started to accelerate to get out of the way. He moved far enough ahead to avoid being struck in the rear.

Roger, sustained possible injuries and was not transported by ambulance. Anthony died at the scene from his injuries. The occupant of the second vehicle struck, Raymond, had possible injuries and was not transported due to his injuries. The occupants of the third vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. All the occupants involved were wearing their seatbelts. Roger, Raymond, and Meghan are all from the Neillsville area and Anthony was from Granton. Multiple units responded to the scene and the Investigation is continuing by the Clark County Sheriff’s, the Coroner’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. This is the 4th traffic fatality for Clark County.
