High Cost Special Education Aid Released to Some State School Districts

Friday, July 7th, 2017 -- 10:12 AM

-High Cost Special Education Aid to school districts and other eligible agencies that teach students with significant disability-related needs totaled $10.7 million for the payment made in June, an increase of just over $5 million from the previous year.

The aid went to 136 school districts and two County Children with Disabilities Education Boards to reimburse 70 percent of prior year eligible costs for special education services. Eligible costs are those that are not covered by other state and federal special education funding and are in excess of $30,000 per student. Aid comes from $8.5 million appropriated in the 2015-17 state budget, an increase of $5 million from the prior year, and $2.3 million from Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funding.

This amount represents 10 percent of the state’s discretionary grant under Part B of IDEA and is a slight increase from the last year’s allocation for High Cost Special Education Aid. Some local school district receiving a portion of that aid include Greenwood with $19,390, Thorp with $11,841, Osseo-Fairchild with $45,657, Marshfield with $13,213 and Medford with $51,329.
