Childhood Injuries on the Farm Continue to Show in Nation's Safety Statistics Report

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Childhood injuries involving agriculture and equipment on the farm continue to show up in the nation's safety statistics reports.

According to 2017 Childhood Agricultural Injuries Fact Sheet, which was compiled by the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety, a child dies in an agriculture-related incident every three days. In addition, the agency says an average of 33 children are injured on U.S. farms on a daily basis.

The NCCRAHS is a division of the National Farm Medicine Center at Marshfield Clinic. Director Barbara Lee says the leading cause of farm-related fatalities is machinery, followed by ATVs and drowning. The National Children's Center is one of 11 Centers for Agricultural Disease and Injury Research, Education, and Prevention funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
