Trump Administration's Immigration Policy Could Have Dire Effects in Clark County, Final

Friday, March 24th, 2017 -- 11:49 AM

-A priority in Washington D.C. could have a dire effect on farms, factories and other jobs here in Clark County.

One of President Trump’s highest priorities is the deportation of undocumented immigrants. He has used a series of executive orders to chip away at the barriers to deportations and hire new law enforcement officials to spearhead the effort. Should he succeed, the effects will be wide reaching including right here in Clark County where a high population of undocumented workers fill positions on farms and in factories. I spoke with Melissa Kono, CNRED Agent, and Richard Halopka, Crops and Soil Agent, with the Clark County UW-Extension Office. They ended our interview by providing some final thoughts on the effect mass deportation could have on our area.

Melissa: "One another policy shortfall too is some barriers to having driving privileges. Especially legal driving privileges. Most people need to drive for work purposes whether it's getting to work, especially in the agricultural field, driving at work. Along with that comes some other negative consequences whether people aren't eligible for car insurance and aren't covered."

Another point I wanted to make too is that there's safety concerns. Agricultural jobs can be dangerous. When we talk about who's coming here to seek work, we're seeing people who are in the prime of their working lives. We're getting people who are young and healthy and coming to work these very physically demanding jobs."

Richard: "It's going to be a challenge. I think another negative too is public perception. There's a public perception that they're creating a problem. These people don't come here to make problems. But when they come here, some of the problems come with. And they're just like any one of us sitting in this room, they don't want that problem."
