Controversial Book Stays in Marshfield English Curriculum

(WDLB) -It sounds as though a controversial book that at least a few parents want removed will stay in the English curriculum at Marshfield High School.Superintendent Dee Wells told the Marshfield Board of Education last night that a special nine-person panel reviewed "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls, and found no problems with it. The committee held a special meeting February 28th, and recommended that the book stay, and Wells had the final say.
Parent Dan Alsides complained a few months ago about the book's strong language and sometimes sexual and explicit situations. There's been no indication that Alsides will appeal the panel's recommendation. Also last night, Board President Marlene Stueland said private donations will cover the cost to hire a fundraising consultant, to coordinate raising money for proposed improvements to athletic facilities--including a new football stadium at the high school.
