American Heart Month and Go Red for Women, Part 1

Thursday, January 26th, 2017 -- 11:37 AM

-February is American Heart Month and it’s also National Wear Red Day-Go Red for Women.

According to the American Heart Association, heart failure is on the rise and cardiovascular diseases are the nation’s leading killer. National Wear Red Day is held the first Friday in February to bring awareness to the shocking statistics regarding heart disease in women. I spoke with Rebecca Rosandick, the Health Educator and Public Health Specialist with the Clark County Health Department, about American Heart Month.

"Today, I want to talk about American Heart Month, which takes place throughout the whole month of February. And I also want to cover the Go Red for Women Campaign and National Wear Red Day. So, during February, the American Heart Association increases its efforts to promote research and education on heart disease and stroke. We know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women living in the United States. And every year one in four deaths are caused by heart disease. In the U.S., someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds. And actually, every 60 seconds, someone in the United States dies from a heart attack or heart disease related event."

Coming up on Friday, Rebecca will talk about some of the conditions of heart disease.
