Neillsville City Council Approves Application for Hazard Mitigation Grant

Thursday, October 27th, 2016 -- 9:03 AM

-The Neillsville City Council approved the Director of Public Works to apply for a Hazard Mitigation Grant at their meeting on Tuesday.

The grant involves 3 properties in Neillsville that were affected by the flooding in September. This grant provides programs and opportunities due to FEMA's declaration of the area being a disaster after the floods. With this grant, the city has to file for it for the 3 properties involved and it must be done by October 31st. The program requires the city to acquire the properties, demolish them and then use the property as green space for the public. 75% of the cost is covered by the federal government, 12.5% by the state and the city would be responsible for 12.5% of the total cost of the project.

The city only approved applying at this time and they can turn the grant down later if they’re approved and they decide they don’t want to acquire the space or cost. During the communications portion of the meeting, a council member talked about the Financial Meeting he attended for Memorial Medical Center. He stated that the 3rd quarter was down for the hospital due to some equipment problems in the ER and having to hire nurses from an agency, which is very expensive. Both issues have been rectified, October is already up in terms of patients and they are expecting to finish strong for the 4th quarter.
