Senator Ron Johnson Talks Re-Election, Part 4

Monday, October 17th, 2016 -- 11:37 AM

-Senator Ron Johnson’s campaign reached out to me last week and I spoke with the Senator about his re-election this November.

Senator Johnson talked in more detail about certain issues, including the nation’s cybersecurity.

"Well, this is really one of my signature pieces of accomplishment. When I first came to the senate, everyone was talking about cybersecurity. We had to do something. Well, four years under the leadership of Harry Reid, the senate did nothing."

"When Republicans got a majority, I took over this chairmanship and so a portion of that cybersecurity bill was under my jurisdiction. So, rather than have sharp elbows and claim jurisdiction over the entire bill, I worked with the Senate Intelligence Committee who had a Information Sharing Bill and then we passed, out of our committee, the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act which authorized the Department of Homeland Security to enforce cybersecurity on all the agencies. Authorize a cybersecurity program called Einstein 3 to help protect our federal cybersecurity assets. And then we got that married up with the senate intel bill and the result of working together, rather than be competitive, we actually got that bill passed into law with the last Omnibus, which is one of the reasons I voted for the Omnibus."

"So, we've actually done that first step. Ensuring the federal agencies actually improve their own cybersecurity and then pass a bill that helps the information sharing so that all these threat signatures can be shared very rapidly in real time between government and different industries without fear of litigation, anti-trust, those types of things. That's just the first step and now we have to build on that. As part of my oversight responsibilities, I'll be providing the oversight to make sure the agencies don't let deadlines lag. That they actually install the Einstein program and actually do what the law tells them to do."

Coming up on Tuesday, Senator Johnson will talk in more detail about some of the issues he will address if he’s re-elected.
