New Library for Colby

Sunday, October 16th, 2016 -- 6:48 AM

(Mitchell Skurzewski, USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -Colby will get a new library three blocks west of the current one to replace the current Colby District Education Center.

The Colby library is currently in the same building as the town's City Hall, and workers say they're excited to have a new space. Demolition of the current District Education Center begins on March 1, 2017, and the new library can start being built. The projected 10,600-foot square foot library is estimated to cost $2.2 million. In January anonymous donors provided $500,000 in January, and the city of Colby pledged to match the donation, creating a $1 million starter fund.

Right now they already have $1.8 million allocated to the new library, including another $300,000 donation. The hope is to get $400,000 more through Colby businesses and residents. The district offices are moving to Colby High School's stage, and library officials haven't decided what will be done with vacated space.
