Neillsville City Council Discusses Reclassifying Some Salary Positions to Hourly

Friday, October 14th, 2016 -- 9:08 AM

-The Neillsville City Council discussed reclassifying salary positions to hourly at their meeting on Tuesday.

This item was first discussed during a Personnel Committee meeting held on September 27th. Three positions were up for the reclassification including Deputy City Clerk-Treasurer, Cemetery Sexton/Parks Director and Head Librarian. This came about due to new rules updating the Fair Labor Standards Act from the United States Department of Labor. The rule significantly increases the salary and compensation levels needed for white collar workers to be exempt and establishes a mechanism for automatically updating the salary levels. The rules go into effect at the beginning of December for this year.

Other wage increases were discussed during that same Personnel Committee meeting. For the most part, wages stayed the same or increased by a small amount. Some increases were just a few cents per hour up to just over $3.00 per hour. Some saw an increase based on a year as opposed to per hour as well.
