Marshfield Family Okay After Sunday House Fire

Monday, October 3rd, 2016 -- 10:10 AM

(Mike Warren, WDLB) -A Marshfield family is okay after their home caught on fire Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Bob Haight said his crews were called just before 5 p.m. to 301 West Marathon Street on the city's west side, after a fire broke out in the garage. Haight said the 26-hundred square-foot single-family home is owned by Tom and Gwen Steensen, who've lived there for forty years. They got out quickly as they learned of the fire, and no one was inside the home as crews began to battle the blaze. And Chief Haight said the home suffered mainly smoke and water damage.

Fire crews were on the scene for three hours. And Haight does not yet know what caused the blaze. He said the garage is a total loss. But he said the rest of the home is still standing, and the ones next door were saved as well. Haight said a car in the driveway was on fire when he got there, along with flames in the garage. And he said this type of call has become quite rare in the city. Haight says he does not yet have a dollar estimate of the damage. Marshfield got assistance from crews in Stratford and Spencer, and the Hewitt Fire Department covered the Marshfield Fire House in case of other calls.
