League of Wisconsin Municipalities Releases Study Results

Saturday, August 27th, 2016 -- 7:36 AM

(AP) -A new study suggests that Wisconsin's villages have struggled more with economic recovery than larger cities since the big recession of 2008-09.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the study also found the controversial Act 10 that was passed to limit collective bargaining by public workers saved local governments about $100 million, or 1.5 percent of total spending, in 2012.

According to the study, municipal property taxes have increased 0.8 percent between 2011 and 2014, as state aid decreased 12.8 percent. Both figures are adjusted for inflation. The study, prepared for the League of Wisconsin Municipalities by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, is the first of what is expected to be annual reviews of municipal survey data. The league lobbies on behalf of Wisconsin's nearly 600 cities and villages.
