Marshfield City Leaders Facing Budget Deficit for Next Phase of Library/Community Center Project

Wednesday, August 24th, 2016 -- 8:39 AM

(Mike Warren, WDLB) -As construction nears completion on Marshfield's new public library, city leaders are facing a budget deficit on the next phase of the project--turning the original library into a community center.

City Administrator Steve Barg told the Common Council last night that the community center project is short by roughly one-million dollars, without taking into account revenue from leasing space in the facility once the renovation is complete. There would be a cost to moving the city's parks-and-recreation department into the renovated space, along with 100-thousand dollars to completely remove asbestos from the original library ceiling.

Marshfield aldermen will consider ways to cover the community center project deficit during their next meeting September 13th. The total cost of the library and community center project is nine-million dollars. The city contributed three-million, and the rest was supposed to be covered with private donations totaling six-million dollars. That final figure was four-point-nine million. The new library opens September 6th. Also last night, the Marshfield Common Council got a new member. Tom Witzel was sworn in as the new district-six alderman, after the rest of the Council voted him in to a seat recently left vacant by Rich Reinart.
