Clark County Health Department's "Get Yourself Tested" Campaign, Part 6

Monday, August 1st, 2016 -- 9:48 AM

-The Clark County Health Department is encouraging county residents to get tested for STI’s.

I spoke with Kelsey Lynn, a nurse at Clark County’s Reproductive Health Clinic, and Melissa Kono, the county’s CNRED agent, about an initiative they’re running known as they “Get Yourself Tested” Initiative. Kelsey talked about the other services the Reproductive Health Clinic in Greenwood offers.

"I don't really ask too many questions. What we would address first would be getting them signed up for Family Planning Only Services and they can do that regardless if they're on their parents insurance. And again, when I talked about the Wisconsin law, so, minors are able to consent to their sexual health care services. It's the same idea when they go to their providers office. So, say they go to Marshfield Clinic; they can have that private and confidential interaction with their provider. However, where it gets sticky, and the difference between a providers office and coming to our Family Planning Clinic, is the parents may receive a bill in the mail because the child is on their insurance that's going to reflect that service. I don't know if it would say birth control or STI testing, but something to that effect and no longer is that going to be confidential because of course the parent is gong to go to that child and ask them what it's about."

"So, we do have emergency contraceptive or Plan B on hand. So, of course, if you were to have unprotected sex you could come to the clinic and I could dispense Plan B. And there is a misconception out in the community that a Plan B is an abortion pill. However, that's not true. That's how it's preventing a pregnancy. Now, say you've already had an egg fertilized and implanted on the uterine wall. That Plan B is not going to harm or interrupt that current pregnancy."

Coming up on Tuesday, Melissa will talk about the startling numbers of people infected and why they need to get tested.
