Marshfield City Council Sells City Hall

Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 -- 9:20 AM

(Jonathan Anderson, Marshfield News Herald) -Downtown Marshfield could see dozens of new residents in the coming years after the Marshfield City Council on Tuesday agreed to sell City Hall for $500,000 and convert it into a 40-unit apartment complex, paving the way for the city to move its offices into a more modern facility.

According to Jonathan Anderson of the Marshfield News Herald, council members voted unanimously Tuesday night after a lengthy closed session to approve the substance of the deal with developer Gorman and Company, although several minor aspects have yet to be worked out, City Administrator Steve Barg said. The nine-story building currently houses most of Marshfield's city government operations and some Wood County offices; the city also leases retail space on the first floor.

Barg and other officials have said the transaction should save the city money because the current City Hall, part of which dates back to 1916, is too big for the city's needs and requires major repairs. Avoiding those expenses, in addition to revenue from selling the building and from leases for rooftop antennas, could enable the city to save $3 million to $3.5 million over the next 15 years, Mayor Chris Meyer has said.
