Wisconsin Dairy Farmers See Another Month of Milk Production Increases

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin dairy farmers have now seen 25 consecutive months of milk production increases compared to year-ago levels.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.64 billion pounds of milk last month, up 4.2 percent from May 2015, and above April's 2.50 billion pounds (which had less days on the calendar). Nationally, 17.5 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 1.2 percent higher than in 2015, but less than the previous month's 16.8 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.64 million head, 11,000 head more than May 2015, but unchanged from April 2016. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head. Production per cow averaged an all-time high of 2,060 pounds, up 85 pounds from a year ago.
