Pittsville Man Who Recently Lost his Home to a Fire Dies from Unrelated Medical Issues

Thursday, June 16th, 2016 -- 10:14 AM

(Marshfield News Herald) -A 47-year-old man who stayed in his burning home in an effort to save his dog died of unrelated medical problems Friday at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Robert Tritz of Pittsville awoke from a nap about 12:30 p.m. May 11 to find his home on fire. Instead of leaving the house, he stayed inside and tried to find McKenzie, his 14-year-old black Labrador retriever. A neighbor got Tritz out of the house and had to keep him from going back inside to rescue the dog, which died in the fire.

Tritz passed away Friday surrounded by his family, according to the obituary published in Friday's Marshfield News-Herald. Tritz' death was caused by unrelated medical issues and the fire is not being considered a cause of his death, said Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor. Minor said he talked to Tritz twice since the fire and his burns were healed to the point where they were hardly visible. But, the fire certainly didn't help Tritz's other medical problems, Minor said.
