Marshfield City Council Approves Street Construction Referendum Question

Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 -- 9:33 AM

(Mike Kobs, WDLB) -Marshfield voters will decide this summer whether property owners will pay more taxes specifically for road construction.

According to Mike Kobs of WDLB, the Marshfield Common Council voted last night in favor of an August 9th referendum question asking city residents if they would be in favor of increasing the tax rate by one-dollar for every one-thousand dollars of assessed value for a period of five years. City Administrator Steve Barg said a "yes" vote would raise nearly seven-million dollars, with the money earmarked for nine major street projects.

"And the reality is that if we can get those done and off our list, that will allows us, as we go into future years, to move other projects up into those slots. So, even though it's a limited list of nine reconstructions, and then some overlays that we'll talk about in the future, it will effect everybody in terms of, hopefully, moving up street work as we go down the road.:

Alderman Chris Jockheck said it'll be up to Council members to educate the public over the next two months about what exactly it is the referendum is asking voters to decide, and he wants as much feedback as possible.

"The council is the body that is putting this forward. And we recognize that it is our responsibility to get out and sell this. Not to take sides necessarily, but to make sure that the citizens are informed and educated on this whole process. So, feel free to call us too."

The city has identified nine street re-construction projects totaling five-million dollars that would be done if the referendum passes, plus one-point-eight million dollars worth of asphalt overlay projects.
