Two Clark County Sheriff's Deputies Resign After Report Reveals One was Hired Even After Accusation of Rape

Friday, June 10th, 2016 -- 11:32 AM

(Jonathan Anderson, USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -Two Clark County sheriff’s deputies have resigned in the wake of a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin report that revealed one of them had been hired after being accused of rape in a previous police job.

That employee, Deputy Lee Lech, resigned May 26, Chief Deputy James Hirsch said Thursday. Clark County Sheriff’s Capt. Clayton Kreitlow, who prepared a background investigation report on Lech that omitted the rape allegations ??" and who was Lech’s former colleague ??" retired on June 1, Hirsch said. Hirsch declined to say whether Lech or Kreitlow gave any reasons for quitting their jobs and referred a reporter to the county’s lawyer.

Hirsch made the disclosures Thursday during a meeting of the county’s Law Enforcement Committee, which met partly behind closed doors to discuss an investigation into how Lech was hired and possible violations of sheriff’s office policy. The probe follows reporting by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin that found Clark County hired Lech despite Kreitlow being informed of the accusations against Lech and after Lech's former boss cautioned against employing him. Sheriff Greg Herrick subsequently placed two employees on administrative leave in late May, but Herrick’s office has not yet revealed whether those two people were Lech and Kreitlow.
