Clark County Committees Hear Update on Emergency Communications Project, Final

Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 -- 11:43 AM

-The Clark County Law Enforcement/Emergency Management Committee and Finance Committee heard an update on the county’s multi-million dollar communication system upgrade project.

The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved the $4.6 million dollar project back in 2014 and the county is being assisted in the project by PSC Alliance. The two representatives from PSC then talked about some budget highlights. Looking at the project today, by following the original items outlined by the county committees, the project is actually under budget at $4.5 million with a $195,000 contingency in case some unexpected costs arise. They also looked further at the costs associated with each tower site. The costs ranged from around $300,000 to over $400,000. However, there were outliers like the Greenwood site which would be much more, over $800,000, because they would have to build a tower. Taking a look at the budget with some of those unexpected costs, like needing to build a tower near Granton or adding a digital channel, that increases the cost of the project to $4.8 million with little wiggle room.

Some other concerns brought up at the end of the meeting included whether two towers are need on the northeast edge of the county, better agreements with proposed tower sites, using a tower just for county purposes or allowing other companies to put equipment on, discussion on analog and digital channels/coverage and the cost of the project.
