Granton School Board Discusses Spring Sports Co-op with Community, Part 3

Tuesday, May 31st, 2016 -- 8:25 AM

-The Granton School Board approved one of the spring sports co-ops with the School District of Neillsville at a Special Board meeting held on Wednesday of last week.

The Granton School Board held an open forum allowing community members to come and talk about their thoughts and concerns in regards to the co-op. One of the concerns brought up about Granton being in a co-op with different schools, like Neillsvillle, is that they lose their identity. The Granton players have to wear Neillsville’s colors and when people talk about the team, they don’t say the Neillsville/Granton football team, it’s just the Neillsville football team. They wanted to make sure that Granton provides a coach from the district so Granton players have an opportunity to be recognized. They feel that with no coaches on their side, Neillsville players get priority over Granton’s players and end up with better positions on the teams because Neillsville’s coaches don’t know them.

An example provided was softball. Neillsville’s players were all in the infield while Granton’s were in the outfield. Another example is when a Granton player tried to wear orange socks with the Neillsville uniform to have some representation for the Granton School District, but they were told they couldn’t. There are, in some cases, rules from the WIAA about uniforms. In the end, the Granton School Board approved to co-op their softball team with Neillsville, but they decided to leave their golf and baseball teams separate. At a recent Neillsville School Board meeting, they approved to co-op all three sports.
