Granton School Board Discusses Spring Sports Co-op with Community, Part 2

Friday, May 27th, 2016 -- 8:19 AM

-The Granton School Board approved one of the spring sports co-ops with the School District of Neillsville at a Special Board meeting held on Wednesday evening.

The Granton School Board held an open forum allowing community members to come and talk about their thoughts and concerns in regards to the co-op. There were those in favor of the co-op with Neillsville feeling that it provide many opportunities and it will allow athletes to play in a whole different environment. The same resident went on to say that he’s talked with Neillsville’s coaches, for football, and they’re excited to have the Granton players. He also felt that more should be done to engage younger kids throughout the elementary to play sports.

There was also a lot of discussion on building more of a winning spirit for Granton’s athletes. Many parents said their kids would state that they were “going to lose anyway” before a game. And people from other communities would come forward and ask parents how their kids’ “keep managing to play when they lose all the time?” It was stated that Granton tends to look at themselves as victims and they need to get over that mentality. The students need more school spirit and more of a winning attitude in order to perform better in their own individual sports and the co-op sports. In the end, the Granton School Board approved to co-op their softball team with Neillsville, but they decided to leave their golf and baseball teams separate. At a recent Neillsville School Board meeting, they approved to co-op all three sports.
