Neillsville Graduate Doing Tours at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Part 3

Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 -- 11:36 AM

-A Neillsville graduate is making his community proud at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Nick Thoma is a 2013 graduate of Neillsville High School who’s currently attending UW-Madison and doing tours at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Nick said he didn’t initially set out to end up at the Space Center.

"I don't know if I'd say it's always something I wanted to do. It's more something that just came up as an opportunity. My background is computer engineering/computer science so I've been more leaning towards the tech industry and getting involved with your Facebooks, your Googles type of work. Software development. I guess I've always kind followed the space programs and what's going on with those. And I got an opportunity to join the program here and co-op; it just kinda made sense to join on."

"In terms of classwork, really just your basic engineering classes and computer engineering stuff. Not really anything specific to aerospace or astronautics or anything like that. It's more of just a math and science course base that will prepare you. And they teach you a lot down here to. They don't expect you to come in and know how space vehicles fly. It's really something that you learn on the job and it's cool."

Coming up on Thursday, we’ll hear about an award that Nick as already received in his short time at the Space Center.
