Ban on Use of E-Cigarettes Indoors in Marshfield Moving Forward

Wednesday, May 18th, 2016 -- 8:03 AM

(Jonathan Anderson, Marshfield News Herald) -A proposal to ban use of electronic cigarettes indoors in Marshfield is moving forward.

The Marshfield City Council last week voted 9-1 to consider adding e-cigarettes to the city’s indoor smoking ban, which prohibits smoking inside most public spaces and places of employment. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat liquid and convert it into a vapor, which a person inhales. That liquid can be flavored and may contain nicotine, the addictive chemical in cigarettes.

Marshfield's proposal would likely exempt shops that sell e-cigarettes from the ban, which other cities have done, such as Madison, council member Ed Wagner said. Owners of e-cigarette stores say it's important to let customers try out the devices and flavors. Council members must still take steps to adopt the measure, and they have yet to review draft ordinance language. That likely will not happen until next month, according to Mayor Chris Meyer.
