Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive This Saturday, Part 2

Thursday, May 12th, 2016 -- 11:34 AM

-The National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is being held this Saturday, May 14th.

I spoke with Lisa Schilling, Postmaster of the Neillsville Post Office, and she explained where the donated food goes.

"It stays local, actually. We keep it right here. Jody Conner, from Job Services, and Mary, from the courthouse, they come down from the Aging Department. They do it and then also Judy, here at the Food Pantry that has been set up in town right there on 5th Street, she partakes in it as well. So, actually this year we're going to drop off some here and some down there right away. And they will go through it and stock their shelves and do what they do. And we get volunteers for it every year. It's a really big deal for Neillsville, I think. A lot of people get involved in it and they seem to really appreciate it. So, I love partaking in it because of that because there is post offices that opt out. You don't have to do it. You're not forced to do it. But we just keep choosing to do it just to help our own community."

Lisa said that Neillsville always has a fantastic response to the food drive every year.

"A very good response. We always have a friendly rivalry/competition with Marshfield and we've beaten them almost every year. Last year, we collected 4,893 pounds. Our highest year ever was in 2010 when we collected 5,715.

Coming up on Friday, we’ll hear one final reminder about the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday.
