Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive This Saturday, Part 1

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 -- 1:15 PM

-The National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is being held this Saturday, May 14th.

I spoke with Lisa Schilling, Postmaster of the Neillsville Post Office, and she explained what to donate, where to donate and how to donate items for the food drive.

"We would like them to donate non-perishable items. No glass. No alcohol. And if they could look at it and make sure it's not expired, that is very helpful because we have to go through it anyway to make sure of that. In case something would happen. Obviously, you're taking it to the food pantry and yet there's a liability involved in that a little bit. They can drop anything off they would like to already starting this week at the post office in the lobby. If they're coming through town go ahead and bring it, that's totally fine. We have a buggy set up right out in the lobby, they can just lay the bags of donations right in there."

"Or, if they're not doing that, the next best thing is to lay it by your mailbox on Saturday the 14th. Or even if they laid it out there on Friday, the carrier would just pick it up and bring it in. But Saturday is the day there will be helpers with the carriers. So, there will be extra people to grab that stuff, so the carrier can still, of course, finish their assigned rounds and not be interrupted with just getting the food and stuff. That's how we usually run it. It's always been so nice with this town. They've been so generous when it comes to donating for the food drive. It's really heart warming to see that people still give to those less fortunate even when times are hard on them as well."

Coming up on Thursday, Lisa will talk about where the food collected this Saturday goes.
