Many U.S. Students Choosing to Take a Year Off Between High School and College

Thursday, May 5th, 2016 -- 8:12 AM

(AP) -A year off between high school and college is becoming a popular choice for U.S. students and it has caught the eye of President Barack Obama's daughter, Malia. The White House says the high school senior will enter Harvard in 2017, not later this year as had been widely expected.

Although 71% of Students at Stevens Point Area Senior High attend either a 2- year or 4 -year college within the first year after graduating, there is a small percentage of students that won't. A lot of students who do take a year off study abroad, complete internships, or engage in other programs through the community.

"Even if that student is going to graduate a year later then their classmates, think of all the other experiences they will go away with. I think it's perfect for that student if they are making an informed decision especially when students don't have a specific plan or goal in mind and they are still trying to find themselves, " said SPASH counselor Valerie Fetting.
