Consortium Trying to Reinvent Medicare

Monday, April 18th, 2016 -- 8:12 AM

(AP) -In an office park near Baltimore, 360 people at the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation are trying to reinvent Medicare to improve it, and maybe save taxpayers money.

They're doctors, lawyers, health policy experts, career Medicare employees. Many came from outside government. Some have seen parents and grandparents harmed in the nation's disjointed health care system. The director is 41-year-old pediatrician Patrick Conway. He says he wants Medicare to be there not just for his mother, but for him and his kids, too.

The center's experiments to improve quality and cut costs are starting to get attention in areas from primary care to joint replacement surgery and cancer treatment. If they succeed, the U.S. may no longer have the worst of both worlds -- unsustainable spending and unenviable results.
