Beware of IRS Scams

-A familiar scam is making its rounds in Neillsville and Clark County.A Neillsville resident recently contacted the Neillsville Police Department stating that she had received a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and that she owed money. This, of course, is a scam. The IRS will not call you trying to collect money with a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. They will not call you trying to get personal information to verify a tax form. They will also not e-mail you to try and get information in regards to your tax return or any other matter.
If you receive any of these types of calls or e-mails, hang up/don’t respond. Just ignore them and delete them. You can contact the IRS directly to see if there’s any legitimacy to what was said and you can contact the local authorities to see if it’s a scam. I’ve received reports of this scam all over the county including Neillsville, Greenwood, Withee and more.
