Spencer School District Changes Graduation Policy

Wednesday, April 13th, 2016 -- 8:13 AM

(Liz Welter, Marshfield News Herald) -A social media protest begun by high school students last year about the Spencer school district's graduation policy has prompted the district to change its policy so that all seniors in the district can graduate together.

The Spencer School Board voted to change its graduation policy so that students from Spencer's satellite schools such as the Rural Virtual Academy will be able to walk down the graduation aisle with their Spencer High School peers this year. The change came as a results of a social media campaign that erupted last spring when some students were barred from the ceremony.

Students will be required to pick one ceremony ??" either at their satellite or at the high school ??" but the choice will be up to them, Spencer District Administrator Mike Endreas said. The Spencer High School commencement ceremony will be 2 p.m. May 21. The board began discussions about the policy after a 2015 student protest on behalf of Alex Neuendorf, an alternative school student who was barred from joining his Spencer peers at the 2015 graduation ceremony. His friends created the hashtag #letalexwalk on social media sites to air their grievances and pressure School Board members to change their policy.
