Representative Bob Kulp's Listening Session in Neillsville, Part 5

Thursday, April 7th, 2016 -- 11:48 AM

-Representative Bob Kulp appeared in Neillsville for a listening session on Thursday along with his guest Senator Terry Moulton.

The two appeared at the American Legion. There were only a few people in attendance, but they covered several topics. Bob and Terry offered their thoughts on different issues facing the Amish Community.

Bob: "You'll never compel them to do anything because it's just not in their nature. They have to want to from the inside for whatever reason. As you know, they tend to look at modern things like vaccination and vaccination is not just a Mennonite/Amish issue. It has a much broader aspect. A lot of people are not into forcing vaccinations and I wouldn't be either because I believe in the ability to choose. They look at modern advances and modern medicine and, while they benefit from a lot of it, they also see that as being part of not being part of the original creation and that's not they way great-great-great-great-grandpa lived in 1822, therefore we're really not that interested in it. So, it's something that's a unique subculture and it's probably not going to change too much in the next 20-30 years."

"We are looking at a number of things to enhance Amish Safety in the Assembly. As to the age of a kid, that's part of the culture again. They grow their kids up very young and very early. So, there is that part of, in their eyes, they're adults by the time they're 10. It's something good about that part of the culture, but if they're not trained, that's a bad thing. One of the things that the task force is doing is having an operator's manual for a buggy. And we're engaging the Amish Community at a level where we will, hopefully, get these into their hands. Other states have done that. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, all have driving manuals. The Amish Community is pretty intent on getting that information out, but it's a work in progress."

Coming up on Friday, Representative Kulp and Senator Moulton will end the listening session with their thoughts on the presidential primary race.
