Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week April 10th-16th, Part 3

Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 -- 9:32 AM

-Next week is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week.

I spoke with John Ross, Clark County’s Emergency Management Director, and he offered tips on how to stay safe in a storm.

"One of the biggest things they can do is have one of the NOAA All-Hazards Radios at home. And make sure that it is on and working and programmed properly. Emergency alert system messages will be broadcast over that radio. It will give you the latest available information regarding watches, warnings and other types of emergency advisories or messaging. Whether you're at work or whether your at school or whether your at home, know where your severe weather shelter area is in that building. If you have a basement, that's obviously the best. If you don't, you want to get as many walls as you can between yourself and the outside. You want to get into an interior room or hallway. Avoid windows, but know where those shelter areas are in advance. And if you don't know, ask someone."

John also explained why people should take time to practice their procedures during the mock watch/warning next Thursday.

"In theory, it's as close to real as we can make it. The emergency alert system will active the weather all-hazards radios. The communication center here in the Sheriff's Office will sound the outdoor warning sirens and go through their procedures. It's a realistic practice and people can, hopefully, determine what they need to do and respond appropriately and accordingly in a simulated event."

Coming up on Thursday, John will explain why Clark County started to do the monthly testing of the warning signs starting in the spring and running through fall.
