The Clark County Sheriff’s Department is happy to introduce their K9 Deputy Michael English and K9 Officer Arthur

Deputy English went to some K-9 trainings to see what the monthly training was like. Most of his learning was at K-9 training itself and after he received the dog. Working with animals as pets is about all the experience he had before getting Arthur.

Deputy English said ambition is one of the most important traits to have in order to be a K9 Officer.  You have to be able to balance your caseload and call load as well as chasing around other officers/deputies to get deployments.

For Deputy English, a typical work week for he and Aruther includes Arthur getting his dinner around 3pm.  Then he relaxes for a while before going outside to kind of stretch and loosen up. Arthur gets to play a little fetch with his tennis ball. After his K-9 pop temperature gauge has a decent temperature reading then Arthur goes in the car. When they hit the county line, they try to get in 15-20 mins of training. Then it's time to go on patrol and see if they can work Arthur on some traffic stops.

As for K9 Arthur, he comes from Hungary. He was born and raised in Hungary.  He was sent from Hungary to Norway for testing at a vet clinic. Once Arthur was cleared at the vet, he was put on a plane and flown to Chicago O'Hare where Jessie from Jessiffany Canine Services picked him up. In January or February, Deputy English went down with their Admin to meet Arthur for the first time.

On March 8th, he officially started training with Arthur at Jessiffany Canine services in Iron Ridge.  Deputy English said that at first it was a little tough since he did not really know much about handling Arthur. Deputy English said Arthur knew what he was doing and I did not. Arthur's a quick learner and, thankfully, Deputy English could keep up with him.

Deputy English said his goals as a K-9 Deputy are to be involved in as much narcotics work as he can. Arthurs a great tool and asset for the department. He also does well around other people and kids so he will also be a good partner to have for walk around events to raise awareness of the K-9 program and just community relations as a whole.

When he's walking around he is very approachable and nonthreatening. Arthurs a goofball but he is also good at his job.  Arthur is a single purpose dog.

His primary purpose is narcotics detection. Arthur is trained in article searches and tracking. His tracking is restricted, so, for officer safety reasons, he will not be used as often for tracking as other department's K-9s.  Deputy English wanted to become a K9 officer because he’s been doing ride-alongs since he started college. Most of his time spent on these ride-alongs have been with K-9 units. He enjoyed seeing the partnership between the handler and his partner. Now that he has Arthur, there really is not a shortage of things to do. He keeps him pretty busy along with all the other things he has to do.  Arthur also tells Deputy English when he leaves the partition door open.

He enjoys crawling up into the front seat and ripping through the drivers compartment trying to find his tennis balls in the doors of the squad. In the process, he turns on the emergency lights and fills the front seat with dog hair.
