One Person Killed in Truck vs. Buggy Accident Near Dorchester

Friday, January 29th, 2016 -- 12:52 PM

-One person is dead after a truck vs buggy accident on CTH A, about 1/10 mile west of Cherry Ave. in the Township of Mayville.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call of the crash at about 1:36 pm, on Thursday, January 28th 2016. Initial investigation indicates a horse drawn buggy, being driven by Aaron N. Newswanger, 50 yrs. old, was eastbound when a large logging truck approached him going west. As they met, about 30 yards away from each other, the horse became spooked and turned abruptly in front of the truck into the lane of traffic. The operator of the truck, Jacob Stai, 36 yrs. old, tried to avoid the buggy and swerved but struck the buggy before entering the north ditch.

Both occupants of the buggy, Aaron and his passenger, Esther Newswanger 49 yrs. old were ejected. Aaron was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Schleifer. The female passenger was transported by Helicopter to the St. Joseph's Hospital for incapacitating injuries. Alcohol and speed does not appear to be factors in the accident. Jacob and his passenger, Devon Coon, 19 yrs. old, were both wearing seatbelts and were uninjured. The two buggy occupants were not using any type of restraints.

The Dorchester Area Fire and Ambulance Service responded to the scene with the Clark County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, St. Joseph's Hospital Spirit Air Helicopter and Coroner Schleifer. The Investigation is continuing by the Clark County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

This is the 1st traffic fatality in Clark County for 2016.
