Marshfield Man Falls Victim to Overseas Scam

Friday, January 22nd, 2016 -- 10:19 AM

(WAOW, Molly Koweek) -Police say a Marshfield man fell victim to a scam that stretched overseas. According to WAOW, that scam involved the packaging and shipment of products with gun connections. The man thought he started a new job that would allow him to work from home.

"They indicated that they had signed up for a work at home job and were contacted by email and had filled out some paperwork which they felt was a legitimate job that they were receiving packages, inspecting them, repackaging them, and sending them to other locations throughout the United States and overseas as well," said Det. Kevin Hamill of the Marshfield Police Department.

However, instead of being a new employee, he says the man was the middle man in an overseas scam. "We received a complaint from a business out of state indicating that they had sent a package to a person in the City of Marshfield," Hamill said. The package was filled with gun magazines for holding bullets, from a company in Florida. The order was placed with a stolen or fake credit card. Before police intervened, the package was headed to Russia. Not only did the Marshfield man not get paid, he's out money he had to spend up front.
