Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop, Final

Thursday, January 21st, 2016 -- 12:26 PM

-The Clark County UW-Extension, along with Lincoln, Marathon and Taylor County UW-Extension and AbbyBank, is bringing a Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop to the Abbotsford City Hall on February, 4th.

I spoke with Nancy Vance, Family Living Agent, Richard Halopka, Crops and Soil Agent, and Melissa Kono, CNRED Agent, about the workshop. Nancy, Richard and Melissa wanted people to know that this workshop is just a first step and the process won't happen overnight.

Richard: "I think one key point is that this is just an initial step. It's just opening their eyes to something they need to take a look at. In transitioning the farm, I think I read in some of the guidelines, it could be as much as a 15 year process."

Melissa: "But we want people to have a plan. And even thought these might be things that are difficult to talk about or difficult to think about for some people, the best thing to do is to make a plan. Without a good plan you could run the risk of losing the farm."

Richard: "And I think Melissa pointed out a key fact there is a family should have a discussion. The other thing is, there's a lot of people that don't want to give up the keys to the farm. And I think that the unique thing is that we talk about is that if you don't make a plan, somebody will make a plan for you.

As they mentioned, they're really encouraging families to come to the workshop.

Nancy: "We're really encouraging families to come which is why there is a bit of a discount if you come with another person. And we'd like to see the different generations of families to come and open up that opportunity to discuss those issues that may come up."

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, you can contact the Clark County UW-Extension Office. If you'd like to attend the workshop, you must be registered by January 29th and the cost is $20 for the first two people of the same farm and an additional $12 for any extra family member.
