Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop, Part 2

Friday, January 15th, 2016 -- 12:33 PM

-The Clark County UW-Extension, along with Lincoln, Marathon and Taylor County UW-Extension and AbbyBank, is bringing a Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop to the Abbotsford City Hall on February, 4th.

I spoke with Nancy Vance, Family Living Agent, Richard Halopka, Crops and Soil Agent, and Melissa Kono, CNRED Agent, about the workshop. Richard explained the topics that will be discussed at the Workshop.

Richard: "The most important thing to understand is that we're not going to cover every topic that day. What we're going to take a look at is just some of the topics to initiate some discussion. And we want to initiate, just an overview, what's the situation on the farm? Is it a family farm? Is there a transition to a family member or are they looking at transitioning the farm to another individual? I mean, we can look at both of those."

"I think, there's two generations we need to take a look at. And that's why we kind of set this program together. To start off the day, we take an overview of estate and succession planning. Then we're going to have some concurrent sessions. The first is the 5 D's. And those D's are disagreement, death, divorce, disaster and disability. Now this may be more attuned to the older generation on the farm."

"And the other breakout panel we be attuned maybe more to the younger generation. We're going to bring in a lender panel, which Melissa Kono, our CNRED Agent, is going to be moderating. The theme is "So You Want to Farm." And it allows some conversation between young people trying to get into the agriculture farming business. Taking to the lenders, what they need to have available when they walk in and talk to a lender."

"The next session is a lawyer coming from Chippewa Falls and he's going to talk about estate planning, again focusing on that older generation. We have a resource fair also that day. A lot of lenders will be available, a number of the technical colleges and some other grazing apprenticeships, some of those types of programs are available in the state."

Coming up on Monday, we'll hear about why a workshop like this is so important, especially for our area.
