4-H Week October 4th-10th, Final

Friday, October 9th, 2015 -- 11:35 AM

-This week is 4-H week.

I spoke with Chris Holler, the Clark County 4-H Advisor, and she ended our interview talking about life skills that 4-H members can receive and practice including interviewing, record keeping, finances and more.

Chris said, "One of the pieces, I mean for the trips I was just talking about, I'm kinda increasing the rigor, I guess you could say, to actually be able to attend the trips. Because I want, part of 4-H is learning life skills like interviewing, writing a resume, being able to write well and hold a regular conversation."

"But for the trips, individuals have to submit an application, which is a resume, just kinda of talking about their work within 4-H, but then also in the community and kinda how they're doing with that. And then the essay is, why do you want to go to, for example, space camp? Tell me what you're going to learn at space camp. Because 4-H is fun; we've got that! We're big on fun! But there's so much learning going on! So, what I want to know, is what are you going to learn when you get there? What do want to experience? Why do you want to go down to Huntsville and go to the moon? Why do you want to go out to Washington D.C.? What do you want to learn on that trip?"

"Then, we're going to sit down and do interviews and practice because it's not easy. Otherwise, everyone would be doing it! Again, it's a family event. It's participating in the club meetings. And then looking out to see what's happening in the county. And then what's happening in Wisconsin with the different programs. So, you're kind of building out because there's different programs throughout the year that you can go to and that's how you meet other kids from other counties."

"So, this week is National 4-H week and it's just a week, but we're here all year long and working all year long. You always have to look ahead to see what's coming up because a lot of the activities we did last year, we'll be doing again. But, it's setting them up, planning them and making sure all those pieces are together."

Chris said that the theme for this year is "4-H Grows Here" and she said it's perfect for our area 4-H clubs.
