Delays for Marshfield Clinic's Renovation Project

Friday, October 9th, 2015 -- 10:56 AM

(WDLB) -Earlier this week, Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital petitioned the Wisconsin Circuit Court regarding a recent decision by the Marshfield Zoning Board of Appeals.

This was in response to the decision of the Board to uphold the decision of the City Zoning Administrator to issue building permits to the Marshfield Clinic for work to be completed in the East Wing, often referred to as the Ambulatory Surgery building.

City Administrator Steve Barg says the petition was not unexpected. In fact, the City says it has rigorously documented the process used in making zoning decisions in anticipation of that action, and will provide that information to the courts for their review. Barg says the City is confident that the court will confirm that it properly followed all required processes and the decisions made were consistent with zoning code.

Ministry Health Care wants a judge to nullify city building permits issued to Marshfield Clinic for hospital settings within the Clinic's east wing that would open next year. It's part of a larger plan for a new 175-million dollar hospital to open in 2018. Ministry says the city should have required the Clinic to get a conditional use permit for its renovations, based on what the city has mandated for hospital and clinic projects in the past.

Clinic C-E-O Susan Turney says she's disappointed over the lawsuit, saying it would disrupt her group's hospital plans and its ability to serve the community. The city's Zoning Board of Appeals has 20 days to respond.
