4-H Week October 4th-10th, Part 4

Thursday, October 8th, 2015 -- 11:10 AM

-This week is 4-H week.

I spoke with Chris Holler, the Clark County 4-H Advisor, and she talked about the many things people and students can do if they're involved with 4-H including some community service events.

Chris said, "So, there's a lot of community service that the clubs do. They're doing some fundraisers depending on what the club likes to do. They're working on different projects. So the little kids have things to do so we're working on Discovery Day coming in the end of December. So, again, it's just kind of feeling out what you're interested in."

"I got the opportunity to visit some schools for their open houses and just talk to some little kids because they're very honest and straightforward! I'd ask them, what do you like to do? And they'd say, not sure! And the parents would be like, well, they're really more crafty, they're really not into sports."

"But there's so many avenues for youth to use their creative energy! But the ability to be able to express your creative side with some of the culinary arts with the cake decorating and foods. With the cultural arts, everything from pottery, to drawings, to rubber stamping, to all of those different pieces. To plants and gardening. I mean, some people just like to get their hands in the dirt!"

"So, it's all those little pieces that build up. It's never just this one, BAM, I'm in 4-H and this is what I'm going to do. Well, it requires you to be in 4-H, so we work with the parent and that's the beauty of 4-H, it's really a parent/family program. Because sometimes the kids can't get to where they need to go without the parent driving them. And since the parent is going to be there anyway, we may enlist their help with some of the things. And so, it is a family program. And parents are learning things as the kids are learning things."

"Again, those are all different pieces of signing up for something and following through. Knowing that they have to continually do different things to be able to earn some of these rewards and it doesn't come automatic."

Chris said that the 4-H will be putting up some displays, handing out information in school and a few other items for 4-H week, but, because of people's busy schedules, that will be the extent of their celebration.
