4-H Week October 4th-10th, Part 3

Wednesday, October 7th, 2015 -- 11:56 AM

-This week is 4-H week.

I spoke with Chris Holler, the Clark County 4-H Advisor, and she talked about the many things people and students can do if they're involved with 4-H including how kids can get use to speaking in front of people by just being a part of their meetings.

Chris said, "That's part of that process and part of the meeting is just being on the executive board and learning some of those roles. Part of the challenge is with our technology, being in front of people is a challenge because if you can be in front of a computer screen, that's a heck of a lot safer than people that are actually going to talk back at you at some point in time."

"But just that comfort level of sitting in front of a group. And you don't have to be president or secretary or treasurer right away. You can be like the reporter or the sunshine person or the historian. Just kind of ease your way up into some of those positions. Because that, again, will build your confidence and that's building some of those characteristics that 4-H is known for."

"Another piece of some of the club work is doing the speeches and demonstrations. But, again, it's just little baby steps to help you get comfortable in front of people. And it's not like, 'oh, I'm going to get all these skills at one fell swoop.' No, probably not, but you also have to participate in those activities within the club and as you move up."

Chris said that the theme for this year is "4-H Grows Here" and she said it's perfect for our area 4-H clubs.
