4-H Week October 4th-10th, Part 2

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 -- 11:41 AM

-This week is 4-H week.

I spoke with Chris Holler, the Clark County 4-H Advisor, and she talked about the many things people and students can do if they're involved with 4-H including traveling to places like Madison and Washington D.C.

Chris said, "Younger youth can go down to Madison for a Youth Leadership Conference for about 3-4 days down there. And they pair up or they are connected with peers from across Wisconsin, so it's just not like just a few people. I mean, sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone and going in on some of these programs helps you do that."

"You'll get connected well, in a fun way, to learn a lot of things just about the Madison campus, but then just different areas of what you can do within 4-H. From the animal piece, to the cultural arts, to crops and soils, so there's a lot of different things out there."

"And then as people age a little bit, there's a Washington Leadership Focus trip, so that youth can go all the way out to Washington D.C. for a week. And that's for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. So, you can learn more about government and citizenship in our nation's capital. Which is really, really cool!"

"There's also Citizenship and we had three youth go out there this summer and there's also Citizenship Washington Focus and we had, I think, three or four youth go out there too. But that's three different things. There's just lots of opportunities."

"We actually had an individual go to Space Camp last April. And so, with Space Camp your going down to Huntsville, Alabama and you're like gearing up! You are checking out the modulus, you're kind of in the real time experience of being an astronaut! So, there's lots of different angles that people can participate in."

Chris said that the 4-H will be putting up some displays, handing out information in school and a few other items for 4-H week, but, because of people's busy schedules, that will be the extent of their celebration.
