Author of Home-Schooled Children in Public School Sports Teams Relative Benefits from the Bill

Thursday, September 17th, 2015 -- 9:49 AM

(AP) -The author of a new Wisconsin law that allows home-schooled children to play sports for public school teams has a young relative benefiting from the legislation.

Gannett Wisconsin Media reports that Rep. Bob Kulp's nephew,Dylan Kulp, plays football for Stratford High School, near Wausau.

State ethics laws generally block public officials from acting on matters that benefit themselves or their immediate family members. The Stratford Republican has said he pushed the legislation at the request of a dozen parents -- not because it would benefit his children.

Such laws are commonly called "Tebow rules" for quarterback Tim Tebow, who led a Florida high school to a state title while being home-schooled. State education officials don't track how man of Wisconsin's 20,000 home-schooled students benefit from the new law.
