April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Part 6

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015 -- 9:48 AM

-April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

I spoke with Melissa Geldernick, the Sexual Assault Advocate for the Personal Development Center.

Melissa explained some of the initiatives the department does in recognition of the month.

She said, "The other thing we try and do is some of this media stuff. I've been trying to do little articles in newspapers. I try to do that. I know The Sentinel and Rural News in Owen last year did two awesome articles for us. So, that's just one more thing."

"I really worry about people falling through the cracks. So, I just try to do what I can with the little bit of resources that we do have. That's the majority of what we do. We're in the school system a lot."

"We try to always do something with law enforcement, social services, community services and the health care providers at the center in Owen. Just making sure that all the new professionals coming in know that our services are here. We do exist. We have offices. That this stuff does happen. So, we always try and make sure that we do those types of training, but we do that throughout the year and not just in April. Just to make sure we have people on board, supporting us because that just makes the system work so much better for people that are weaving in and out."

Coming up on Thursday, we'll hear about more of the initiatives the PDC does in recognition of the month.
