-Congress has sent President Barack Obama a short-term spending bill that will keep the federal government operating through Wednesday and avert a government shutdown.Senate passage came Saturday with only hours to spare before an earlier stopgap measure was set to expire. By a voice vote, senators approved the latest short-term funding bill and that package will cover much of the government through most of 2015.
Also, a $1.1 trillion spending bill has cleared a procedural hurdle in the Senate and is headed toward passage. The vote on Saturday night was 77-19 and sets the stage for passage of the long-term funding bill. Once passed, the bill will head to President Barack Obama for his signature.
The bill provides funds for nearly the entire government through the Sept. 30 end of the current budget year. The Senate will be back at work on Monday to deal with remaining items on its lame-duck agenda.
