DNR Approves Public Hearings on Rules for Deer Hunting

Sunday, December 14th, 2014 -- 6:20 AM

-The state Department of Natural Resources' board has approved public hearings on permanent rules implementing recommendations from Gov. Scott Walker's deer trustee.

Walker hired Texas deer researcher James Kroll in 2011 to review the DNR's deer management tactics. The agency implemented his suggestions for the 2014 seasons through temporary rules. The changes included starting electronic registration, establishing county deer advisory councils and offering cheaper antlerless tags to private landowners who work with DNR biologists.

The rules expire in mid-June. DNR officials have drafted permanent rules that largely mirror the temporary ones. The DNR plans to hold nine public hearings around the state in January ahead of bringing the rule to the board for adoption in February. The board approved the hearings during a meeting Wednesday.
